Sylvain Poirier
Active on the Montreal contemporary dance scene since 1984, Sylvain Poirier has demonstrated his great quality as an interpreter of dance pieces by numerous contemporary creators. A real athlete of movement, he began an intensive training program in artistic roller skating at the age of thirteen and was part of the world championships at seventeen. From there, his passion for body motion would guide his life.

He began his dancing career with the Louise Lapierre dance Company and soon after participated in many television productions. In 1986, he became a member of Montréal Danse, in which he interpreted the pieces of Paul-André Fortier, James Kudelka, Natsu Nakajima and Catherine Tardif, just to name a few. Poirier stayed in the Company until 1990. He then became a freelance dancer, working with choreographers such as Sarah Bild, Danièle Desnoyers, Lynda Gaudreau, Natalie Morin, Sylvain Émard, Irèni Stamou and Pierre Lecours. He also collaborated on many occasions with dance companies Les Productions Cas Public and La Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault, for which he performed all over the world. He also held the first role in two productions of Ciné Qua Non Film ; « Une feuille dans le vent » from Tim Southam and «L'automate et les sortilèges » by Raymond St-Jean.

Poirier created his first real choreography « Autour des palombes », in the winter of 1998 co-signing the piece with choreographer Hélène Blackburn. He later created the trio « Les Mémoires », an intense and sensitive piece. With this work he refined his choreographic signature and the line of energy expended was drawn paving the way for the direction of his future works.

Today, Sylvain continues, with passion and persistence, to complete the cycle of “La Poésie des Ailleurs”, developed with support of ‘la bande dansesylvaindanse[point]com’.
